Report Crime Tips Via SMS

I just read the press released below today. The SJA Mobile has announced with the FBI’s Washington D.C Field Office and Metropolitan Police an initiative which will enable D.C-area citizens to anonymously report crime tips via SMS or text messaging. I think this should be a very good idea as citizens in the D.C. area can report a crime by sending a test message only. It would help to prevent crime happen. This service is available on all major wireless carriers and I hope they could expand the services to more cities just like what they said in the press.

SJA Mobile today jointly announced with the FBI’s Washington D.C Field Office and Metropolitan Police an initiative which will enable D.C-area citizens to anonymously report crime tips via a novel new medium – SMS. SMS, or “text messaging,” has up until now never been used before as a medium for crime tips.
Citizens in the D.C area can report a crime or homeland security tip by sending a text message with the tip to the number 50411. The 5-digit number to text to is called a “Short Code.” Currently the service is available on all major wireless carriers, along with several Tier 2 carriers.
SJA Mobile is in talks expand the service to several other major cities.

    When I was in Washington DC last summer, my friends pointed out a police officer standing on a corner and my friends mentioned that in DC, if you are at a corner talking on a cellphone, the officer will write you a ticket.

    I can see a lot of people witnessing a crime, coming to a stop light to text the police, and then getting a ticket because the officer on the corner thought they were talking.
